About Luba Lowry

Born and raised in the remote Siberian outpost where Tsar Nicholas I exiled infamous Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky, Luba Lowry studied painting under exceptional Russian tutelage during an arduous era of a rapidly declining society and broken culture. Winning a beauty contest at age eighteen was the catalyst that allowed Luba to escape her isolated roots—first moving from Central Asia to Central Europe, later spreading her wings and talents to the Middle East, and finally securing the opportunities and citizenship of The United States of America.

Luba’s artistic journey then extended to Savannah, where a Presidential scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) afforded her the opportunity to study fashion and further her painting techniques, skills, and artistic aspirations. While studying at SCAD, Luba fell in love with the city’s exceptional beauty and chose to make Savannah her permanent home.

The art of Luba Lowry features old-school Russian brushstrokes carefully interwoven with her idiosyncratic American flair. Intensely focused in recent years on capturing the complete landscape and a sweeping portrait of the city of Savannah, Luba is often found in her favorite setting: painting outdoors where the historical panorama and engaging people of Savannah can be captured on canvas. Luba’s postcard-sized en plein air oil paintings have become a favored treasure among her devoted patrons and are frequently used as studies for her more significant studio-produced works.

How does a Russian immigrant and former Soviet Pioneer relate so intimately to a city rooted in the Old South that invented the American Girl Scout? The subtleties of reflective nostalgia inspire Luba to witness Savannah as it honestly survives: unexcelled beauty encumbered by authentic cultural tragedy. Luba’s Russian grounding affords comprehension and an empathetic connection to the nostalgic soul and the kind-hearted aloofness of Savannah’s diverse citizenry, augmenting a deeper appreciation of this beautiful city’s iniquitous historical legacy.
